Michael J Tully Park Parking Lot Reconstruction

Posted in Park Services

Michael J Tully Park is located in the Town of North Hempstead and contains an indoor swimming pool facility, tennis & pickle ball courts, a stadium with a turf athletic field and track, dog park, playgrounds, and baseball fields. Sections of the park are constructed over areas that were previously used as a sand mine and landfill. Over the years, the degradation of the landfill lead to an extremely unlevel surface with significant potholes and ponding.  The scope of work included completely removing the existing asphalt surface, stormwater drainage system, lighting, and removing and disposing of the existing fill. Subsequentially, GBI installing a reinforcing geogrid layer and fill to prevent future settlement, new stormwater drainage system including over half a mile of drainage pipe and twenty-five drainage structures, placed over a mile of new concrete curbing, light poles, regraded and resurfaced the parking lot. Additionally, GBI drove over 1,800 vertical linear feet of steel piles to support the light poles. GBI was also able to recycle elements of the park as part of an offshore artificial reef system. All construction activities were coordinated with the Town of North Hempstead to keep the park open for residents throughout the duration of construction and GBI’s work did not impact the use of any of the facilities. This project not only gave Michael J Tully a parking lot worthy of its amenities but was completed 3 months ahead of schedule.
