Greenwood Cemetery – Green Infrastructure Projects
Posted in Civil ServicesAs part of the ongoing NYC DEP Green Infrastructure Program, Galvin Bros., Inc. performed four different green infrastructure projects to enhance the stormwater management and alleviate chronic flooding issues across the cemetery.
In Area 1, Galvin Bros., Inc., was contracted by Arcadis in conjunction with DEP and Green-Wood Cemetery to install a subsurface storage and bioretention system, located in the cemetery’s maintenance yard, that would accommodate the day-to-day needs of the yard while providing enhanced stormwater management services to alleviate chronic flooding issues on the site.
In Area 2, GBI was contracted by Brightstorm and eDesign Dynamics in conjunction with DEP and Green-Wood Cemetery to install a subsurface storage and bioretention system, located in the cemetery’s roadway system, that would not disrupt travel of visitors and maintenance vehicles while providing enhanced stormwater management services to alleviate chronic flooding issues on the site. These assets utilized a check dam style retention system and porous pavers to capture and retain storm water.
In Area 3, as part of the ongoing DEP Green Infrastructure Program at Greenwood Cemetery, Galvin Bros., Inc. was contracted by Brightstorm and eDesign Dynamics in conjunction with Green-Wood Cemetery to install a unique system that allows Greenwood to manage the levels of Sylvan Water. The system includes an RMS filtration pump assembly enabling the cemetery to use the stored water to irrigate their 478 acre landscape and a smart sensor installed at the overflow that discharges to the combined sewer. The electronically monitored actuator automatically drains the water level down 24-hours ahead of a storm event to increase the amount of water the lake can hold.
Performed as a subsidiary during the construction of NYC DEP Green Infrastructure Program at Greenwood Cemetery. Galvin Bros., Inc. was contracted directly by Greenwood Cemetery to repair their badly deteriorated Sylvan Ave Drainage swales and roadway. Years of stormwater runoff had caused wash-out erosion and pavement damage. Galvin Brothers repaired the concrete curb and reset the Historic gutters using the original cobble stone at the request of Greenwood Management. The existing cast iron grates were reset on the original brick catch basins and then the whole system was cleaned and cleared of sediment.
